Those who attend the New Glasgow Riverfront Jubilee know that it is an extremely well-oiled machine that flows easily each and every year. Without volunteers for this annual event, this would not be the case. It is these committed volunteers, like Marjorie Cameron, who make the Jubilee experience.
Cameron has been volunteering with the Jubilee committee for almost 15 years and she loves every minute of it.
“I love it,” she says. “It can be stressful at times, but overall, it is a great experience.”
Cameron began her volunteering in the Jubilee beer tent and worked her way up to her current volunteer position, artist hospitality in the Green Room at Glasgow Square.
“At one point I was in charge of organizing the volunteers for the Friday and Saturday night shifts at the beer tent,” laughs Cameron. “It was crazy at times but always fun.”
Cameron very much enjoys her current position, which she has done for the past four years.
“It flows really well and you get a real insight into the artists,” she explains. “You get to know them and see a different side of them.”
Cameron is in the know with the different artists and entertainers and shares, “Of every artist I have worked with, I haven’t heard of any that have left and not wanted to come back and play the Jubilee again because it’s such a good experience for them.”
Cameron cannot remember how she first became involved with the Jubilee but says she couldn’t imagine not volunteering.
“I can’t remember how I got involved but I remember how much fun I had and how I got some of my friends to come out the following year,” she says. “I have enjoyed every position I have volunteered in.”
Cameron says the reason she keeps coming back however, is the amazing people like Carlton Munro, event co-ordinator.
“Carlton is so great to work with,” says Cameron. “He makes you feel like you are a valuable part of what’s going on. And the music and artists, I have enjoyed meeting so many artists and other volunteers.”
With volunteering also comes a feeling of accomplishment.
“You get that feeling when it is over, on Sunday night you say to yourself, that went really well. It’s a good feeling and it’s nice to know you have another year under your belt,” says Cameron. “It’s such a sense of accomplishment and it is always a great experience.
Cameron volunteers with Glasgow Square, the East Coast Music Awards and Stanfest each year. But her heart lies with the Jubilee.
“The local artists are such great people,” she says. “I just love Dave Gunning and the Stanfields are an amazing group of guys.”
Cameron says the Jubilee committee is always looking for volunteers.
“I can’t imagine anyone not enjoying it,” she says. “You get to see so many people and be a part of it all. I think Pictou County should be really proud of this event and I wish more people could come out to support either by volunteering or just attending.”
