Jubilee Announces Free Programming

Thursday, June 30, 2011

New Glasgow, Thursday, June 20, 2011...It’s all about the music. Earlier this year, the Jubilee announced what is arguably one of the most talent-rich line-ups in its history. Now the Jubilee is announcing a free day program that will put more diverse music experiences on stage this year by co-producing events with the Blues Society, Youth Council and Celtic Circle Cultural Centre. New Glasgow’s Carmichael Park and The Celtic Circle will be the host locations for these shows.

Carmichael Park, a pretty piece of green space with big shade trees sitting above New Glasgow’s East River, will play host to the “Carmichael Park Stage”. Refreshments will be served and revellers are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets.

On Saturday, July 30 from 12pm-4pm, it’s the Scotsburn Dairy Children’s Jubilee, featuring performances from Razzmatazz and New Glasgow’s Crystal Mann, along with bouncy rooms and children’s games.

From 5pm-6pm, the whole family can join in for free Zumba led by Kelli Cruikshank and Kelly MacLeod, a perfect way to get the energy flowing for the rest of the weekend.

On Sunday, July 31, the Carmichael Park stage opens at 1:30pm with the Youth Stage, as the Pictou County Youth Council presents some of the next generation Jubilee performers.

The second annual Blues in the Park, presented by the Pictou County Blues Society, rounds out the afternoon with three hours of programming beginning at 3:30pm, featuring Big Island’s Boogie Woogie Blues Lady Doris Mason, Calgary blues harmonica player Dylan MacDonald and Special Guest Sean Stephens of the Great North Blues Band and Halifax’s Shirley Jackson and The SideCats.

Also, on Saturday, July 30 at 1pm, the Jubilee and The Celtic Circle will present the 2011 Jubilee Songwriters Circle and Workshop at The Celtic Circle on Forbes St. in New Glasgow. The songwriter’s circle is one of the most engaging ways to get to know the music makers and the stories behind the songs. This year’s circle will feature one of the East Coast’s most respected singer-songwriters Dave Gunning. Dave will join multiple ECMA nominee Carmel Mikol and Carmen Townsend, as well as three aspiring youth singer-songwriters from the area. Just prior to their performance, at 11am, Gunning, Mikol and Townsend will conduct a songwriter’s workshop. These events are also a part of the free day program.

Another new feature this year, international performing artists Zap Circus will be Busking throughout Jubilee weekend. They can be found at Carmichael Park during the day and at the Jubilee grounds in the evenings. These “Zany Acrobatical Pyrosapiens”
(ZAP) from Perth, Western Australia, astonish crowds as they twist, bend and balance, up high or on the ground. While performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival last year their high-energy street shows “Street Chaos” and “The Evolution of Fire” drew massive crowds and had Fringe audiences whooping for more and now Zap Circus is bringing their act to New Glasgow.
